1993年澳大利亚布里斯本的Red Edge乐团征求主唱，当时任幼儿教育老师的戴伦·海斯在报上看到了征人启事，便去应征。他与吉他手丹尼尔·琼斯一拍即合，加入了Red Edge担任主唱。不久他们创作了第一首歌曲：A Thousand Words，后来戴伦·海斯及丹尼尔·琼斯就离开了Red Edge，组了自己的乐团。
　　戴伦·海斯当时着迷于安·莱斯的吸血鬼编年史系列小说，其中的《夜访吸血鬼》和《吸血鬼黎斯特》都提到了Savage Garden，那是一个蛮荒、嗜血的失乐园，后来他们就用Savage Garden当成乐团的名称。
